The different types of pole dance poles
There are several models of homepoles, each designed for a specific use and environment.
- Fixed poles (as well as removable poles with ceiling and/or floor mounts) are permanently installed between the floor and ceiling. They provide optimal stability. They are highly recommended for pole dancing studios.
- Classic removable poles are very popular for home use. They are pressure-mounted without drilling and can be quickly removed. This is a practical solution for apartments.
- Stage poles rest on a freestanding base and do not require a load-bearing ceiling. This type of pole is used for public demonstrations, competitions, or for those who wish to train in a variety of locations without installation constraints.
Static or spinning: understanding the difference
Pole dance poles come in two main types: static and spinning.
- In static mode, the pole remains fixed and offers maximum control. This allows you to work on your strength, consolidate your technical basics, and progress in your holding movements.
- Spinning mode allows the pole to rotate on its axis for dynamic sequences and figures. It requires some control, as the rotation makes it harder to manage your body and speed.
Most high-end poles, such as the X-Pole XPERT Pro and Lupit G2, combine both modes. You can switch from static to spinning depending on the workout you want.
Choosing the diameter and material of your pole dance pole
Beyond the type of pole, there are several technical criteria to consider when making your choice:
- Diameter: 45 mm is now the international standard and the size used in competitions, as it suits most people. The 40 mm size is popular with pole dancers with smaller hands, as it makes it easier to grip during holding figures. Although less common, the 42 mm size is an interesting compromise for those who find the 40 mm too thin and the 45 mm too wide.
- Material:
- Chrome poles are the most common. They offer a good balance between grip and glide.
- Stainless steel poles are slightly more resistant to corrosion and hypoallergenic (no nickel).
- Brass poles are particularly suitable for hot/humid climates (they provide better grip than conventional bars).
- Special coatings (powder coated, silicone, etc.) are appreciated for their grip, which is useful for people who sweat a lot, for example.
- Rotation: the pole offers two rotation modes to vary your practice styles and progress more quickly. Static rotation is for basics and strengthening, while spinning is for sequences and spinning tricks.
Installing a pole at home
Before installing a pole at home, check the ceiling height. Most standard poles are adjustable between 2.20 m and 2.80 m. It’s recommended to check the strength of the supporting surfaces. Plasterboard ceilings or false ceilings cannot withstand the pressure exerted by a pole mounted between two surfaces. Once installed, the pole must be checked regularly. Finally, we recommend you to allow a clear space of 1.50 m around the pole so that you can practice freely without the risk of colliding with furniture.
