FIRST POLE OR AERIAL PHOTOSHOOT? HERE’S HOW TO PREPARE

You’ve booked your first aerial photoshoot and you’re worried about forgetting something or not being properly prepared? A photoshoot, even in an apparatus you already master, is very different from a regular class or practice session. It’s a unique experience that deserves some planning so you can fully enjoy the moment — without those “oh no, I didn’t think about that” moments.

In this article, we’re sharing all the tips to help you make the most of your photoshoot in the best possible conditions!

CHOOSING YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER

The first step starts here — and it’s not a small one. Many factors come into play: the photographer’s style, location, and pricing. While these criteria are personal to everyone, there’s one rule you shouldn’t compromise on: choose a photographer who makes you feel comfortable. To help with this, don’t hesitate to ask people who have already done shoots with that photographer for feedback.

Here are a few important questions to ask yourself:

  • How does the shoot work? Solo or group session? How long does it last?
⇒ This information will help you organize the order of your poses and tricks during the shoot.
  • Was the photographer kind and respectful? Have they ever made inappropriate comments or gestures?
⇒ If you have any doubts, don’t take the risk of thinking “we’ll see how it goes.”

Once you’ve found the right photographer, all that’s left is to book the session and move on to the next step!

CHOOSING YOUR SHAPES / TRICKS

No matter the discipline, we all have favorite tricks — and others we absolutely hate! A photoshoot can be the perfect opportunity to capture a milestone in your journey, but be careful: always choose “safe” tricks.

You should never try a brand-new trick during a shoot, or attempt one you only half-master. Why? Because depending on the setup, there may be no coach, spotter, or crash mat present. A fall can happen quickly and turn a beautiful experience into a traumatic one.

Choose tricks you truly master and can hold for several seconds without risking a fall. No photo is worth putting yourself in danger. ;)

💡 Tip: Always prepare more shapes than you think you’ll need. On the day of the shoot, depending on your physical condition, mental state, or the shooting conditions, some tricks may not work out. Always have backup options!

ORGANIZING THE ORDER OF YOUR TRICKS

Depending on how the shoot is organized, your planning will differ. For example, if the photographer is shooting you alone for 20 minutes, your rest periods will be shorter. On the other hand, during group shoots, participants alternate turns, which gives you more regular recovery time. :)

Now that you know this, it’s time to plan the order of your tricks:

  • Start with 2 or 3 simple tricks that don’t require extreme strength or flexibility, so you can assess how you feel and finish warming up.
  • Then move on to the harder tricks — the ones that require all your energy and concentration. You’re still fresh, so this is the ideal time for challenging moves.
  • Finally, gradually decrease the difficulty level. Fatigue will build up, so it’s better to finish with easier tricks.

💡 Tip: Often, the simplest tricks look the best in photos because you can hold them comfortably long enough to find the perfect angle — with a relaxed face and sometimes even a smile!

THE DAY BEFORE

The big day is approaching — time to pack your things! But what should you remember to bring?

Here’s a non-exhaustive checklist:

  • Different outfits you feel good in
  • Grip
  • Heels/Pleasers
  • Accessories (fabric, fan, flowers, etc.)
  • Makeup (for touch-ups if needed)
  • Hairbrush (in case you want to change hairstyles)
  • Easy-to-slip-on shoes (for outdoor shoots)
  • Skirt, sarong, or towel (to change more easily)
  • Warm-up equipment: mat, resistance band, yoga block, etc.
  • Sweatpants/sweater (in case you get cold between shots)
  • Water bottle
  • Snacks

💡 Tip: If you’re hesitating between outfits, think about the grips they allow and which tricks are possible with them!

THE BIG DAY

That’s it — you’re there! Everything is ready, all that’s left is to enjoy it. ;)

No pressure: if a trick doesn’t work, it’s totally okay to try again. Take your time, and if it doesn’t happen this time, it’ll happen next time!

Don’t hesitate to communicate with the photographer and ask to see previews of the photos if you’re unsure whether you like the result.

Above all, enjoy the moment!
