5 Common Grip Mistakes Pole Dancers Make

Grip can quickly become an essential part of your pole dance practice. It helps you feel more comfortable on the pole, reduces slipping, and gives you more confidence when working on different moves.

But you need to use it correctly. If you’ve ever felt like your grip “isn’t working,” the problem may not actually be the product. Sometimes, a simple bad habit can significantly reduce its effectiveness.

Let’s see the 5 most common mistakes to avoid.

1. Using way too much grip

This is probably the most common mistake: thinking that the more grip you use, the better your grip will be.

But that’s rarely the case. Using too much can leave a layer of product on your skin, making contact with the pole less effective. It can also leave more residue, which gradually builds up on the pole.

In other words, there’s no need to cover your hands of grip before getting on the pole. Most grip products are designed to be used in small amounts. Start with a little, spread it evenly, and only add more if needed.

Sometimes, the difference between good grip and that slippery feeling comes down to just a few too many drops.

If you’ve applied too much, don’t worry. Just rinse your hands with clean water. There’s no need to apply more afterwards—the grip will already have done its job!

2. Choosing a grip that doesn’t suit your skin

There’s no one-size-fits-all grip that works perfectly for everyone. How much you sweat, your skin texture, and even the type of grip you’re looking for can all affect which product works best for you.

If your hands tend to get very sweaty, you’ll probably be better off with a drying grip like the Enviro Grip or the Polipole dry. On the other hand, if your hands are naturally dry, you may need a stickier grip like the Viscosi Liquid Rosin or the Sticky Mania from Polipole to improve your hold.

And if the main issue is your body slipping against the pole, a body grip like an iTac2 may be a better option.

So, if a grip doesn’t work for you, it doesn’t necessarily mean the product is bad. It may simply not be the right match for your skin type or your specific needs.

3. Applying your grip at the last minute

You may know the situation: you’re about to start your combo, quickly apply some grip to your hands, and immediately grab the pole.

However, some products need a few seconds before they become fully effective. Taking the time to spread the product properly, let it dry, or, depending on the product, reactivate it with the warmth of your hands can make a real difference.

⚠️ Another small detail that can make a big difference: before every training session, avoid applying anything oily to your body, such as lotion or oil. These products can prevent your grip from working properly and make you slip on the pole.

4. Not cleaning the pole properly

We often think about the product before thinking about the surface we’re using it on.

But a pole covered in sweat, old grip residue or lotion won’t allow the product to work properly. Your first instinct may be to apply more grip, when the real problem is simply the pole itself.

🧽 Before reaching for more grip, take a few seconds to clean your pole with a microfiber cloth and a suitable cleaning product. A clean surface provides better conditions for grip and also helps prevent residue from building up over time, keeping your pole clean and well maintained.

5. Thinking grip can replace technique

Grip is there to help you, not do the work for you. ;)

Good grip will never replace the right hand position, proper muscle engagement, or correct body positioning. Your points of contact with the pole and the way you execute a move also play a key role.

This is especially important when a move feels difficult or you find yourself slipping. Adding more grip might make you feel safer in the moment, but it won’t necessarily fix the underlying problem.

Before applying more, ask yourself:

  • Is my grip correct?
  • Is my body positioned properly?
  • Am I engaging my muscles enough?
  • Am I using the right points of contact?

👉🏻 Grip can improve your adhesion, but it can’t replace good technique.

💡 To Sum Up

Using grip effectively isn’t simply about applying more whenever you start to slip. The amount you use, the type of product, when you apply it, how clean your pole is, and your technique all play an important role.

And often, small adjustments can make all the difference ! Before switching to a different grip or applying more product, start by checking these five points. You might be surprised by the results... :)
