POLE DANCER : STARTER PACK

So, you’d love to give pole dance a try but don’t know where to start? At Pole Factory, we know those first steps can feel overwhelming: you’re not sure what you need, what to do (or not do), or even where to find the right information.
👉 That’s why we’ve put together a handy little checklist – a pole dancer’s starter pack – that we hope will help you find some clarity as you dive into this new passion!
1. POLE
Yes, it’s obvious: to pole dance, you need… a pole!
If you’re starting with group or private classes (which we highly recommend, to learn proper technique and avoid injuries), you won’t need to worry too much – the studio will provide everything. But if you decide to also get one at home for extra practice, the big question will quickly come up: which pole should I choose?
👉 What you need to know before choosing:
• TYPE OF POLE
- If you have a false ceiling or want to train outdoors, go for a stage pole.
- If you’re training in a smaller space and want something you can easily take down, a tension-mounted pole is your best bet. Just keep in mind you’ll need:
- A solid ceiling (no unsupported false ceilings)
- A clear space of about 1.5m (5ft) radius around the pole (so 3m/10ft in diameter)
- The exact height of your ceiling – poles adapt to various heights, but you may need extra extensions.
• DIAMETER
Standard options are usually 40mm, 42mm, or 45mm. Studio and competition poles are generally 45mm, so if you want consistency, that’s a safe choice. Smaller diameters, however, can be great if you have smaller hands – easier grip, though sometimes less comfortable for leg holds.
• MATERIAL
Chrome, stainless steel, brass, titanium gold, powder-coated, silicone, gecko grip… so many options! We’ve actually written a whole article on this topic (since it deserves a post of its own 😉), which you can check out here.
• BRAND
Yes, the brand matters! Different brands offer different spins, stiffness, and finishes. What’s most important is avoiding “cheap, no-name” poles for safety reasons. We’ve also prepared a comparison guide for you – check it out here!
2. CRASH MAT
Now, here’s where opinions split: the pro-crash mat team vs. the crash mat skeptics. Both sides are right, and here’s why.
If you train alone (without a spotter to catch you “just in case”), a crash mat is definitely a good idea. It helps prevent injuries and gives you the confidence to try new moves.
BUT, caution! Having a crash mat doesn’t mean you should let yourself fall all the time or attempt the impossible. Overusing it can actually prevent you from learning how to fall safely or assess risks properly. And there will be times when you won’t have one.
👉 So yes, crash mats are great – but use them wisely 😉 Plus, they come in all shapes and sizes: thicker, thinner, round, square… We’ve listed our favorites here!
3. GRIP
One of the trickiest topics in the world of pole dance! Grip is the product you use on your hands, body, or pole to prevent slipping (like chalk in climbing or rosin in ballet).
There are all kinds: drying, sticky, ultra-adhesive… and in all forms: powders, gels, pastes, sprays…
Just like with crash mats, grips are excellent allies (especially if you sweat a lot or want to test new tricks), but don’t overuse it! Training without grip helps build strength, grip endurance, and toughens your skin. So yes, use it – but not 24/7!
👉 A selection of our favorites is waiting for you here.
4. OUTFIT
Our favorite topic!!
We don’t have too many “technical” tips here, but remember:
- You stick to the pole with your skin – so at minimum, shorts + t-shirt/sports bra (except on silicone-coated poles, where you actually need to protect your skin). (FYI: there are also sticky leggings that work on standard poles)
- You’ll be upside down at some point – so make sure you have proper support, especially if you have a larger chest.
- Pole is a real sport – comfort first! Choose stretchy, breathable fabrics.
- For exotic pole, boots can be a good idea at first to protect your ankles.
And then… have fun! Colors, cuts, fabrics, transparency – the choice is yours!
👉 On the Pole Factory shop, you’ll find a curated selection of stylish, unique, high-quality outfits for every budget.
5. WARM-UP ESSENTIALS
“Last but not least”, as they say.
Before every training session, warming up is essential – the golden rule of pole. Why? To avoid injuries like strains or pulls, to wake up your muscles, stretch your tendons, boost your performance, and prepare your body for a sport that requires both strength and flexibility (don’t worry, it develops over time!).
For beginners, all you really need is a mat, leggings, a water bottle, and good socks or leg warmers – and you’re good to go! Later, you can add yoga blocks or resistance bands to take your training deeper.
👉 We’ve put together our favorite warm-up essentials here.
And there you go!
You’re now ready to get started. Of course, this is just a small taste – the bare essentials. You’ll keep learning along the way!
